SPEECH EVENTS - The following are the Individual Events
National Forensic League, Competition Events Guide
Oratorical Interpretation(OI):Like the idea of Original Oratory but not a strong writer? No problem! Memorize and deliver a published speech, many of which were created previously by Original Oratory competitors.Original Oratory(OO):In Original Oratory, speakers are expected to research and speak intelligently, with some degree of originality, in an interesting manner, and with some profit to the audience, about a topic of significance. Although many orations deal with a current problem and propose a solution that is not the only acceptable form. The speech may alert the audience to a threatening danger, strengthen a devotion to an accepted cause, or eulogize a person. The speaker is given free choice of subject and judged solely on the effectiveness of development and presentation. In OO you write your very own speech on any topic you select! If you like to convince others to believe in your ideas, this could be the event for you! Each original speech should last 7-10 minutes. Prose Poetry(PP):A combination of previously published prose and poetry selections read from a script to express a specific feeling or mood. Competitors may put together their own script from favorite selections of literature.
International Extemporaneous Speaking(IX):This event is for the student who likes to know what is going on in the world. You are permitted 30 minutes to prepare a 5-7 minute speech on a current event topic. Foreign Extemp deals with global topics, while Domestic Extemp deals with issues here in the United States.United States Extemporaneous Speaking(USX):This event is for the student who likes to know what is going on in the world. Foreign Extemp deals with global topics, while Domestic Extemp deals with issues here in the United States.Impromptu Speaking:A newer speech event in which unique and random topics are spoken upon for 3-5 minutes with only a 5 minute preparation time. This event allows room for a lot of creativity and personality.Duo Interpretation(Duo):Duo Interp is a two-person category in which the selection may be either humorous or dramatic in nature. Selections can be cuttings from published-printed novels, short stories, plays, poetry, or any other printed-published materials. The Presentations must be memorized, without props or costumes. The time limit is 10 minutes. Duo is somewhat like Humor and Drama, you can choose from either type of script but instead of performing by yourself you get a partner. The challenge comes in as you can't make eye contact or touch your partner during the performance.Dramatic Interpretation(DI)Dramatic Interp is an individual event in which the selections are dramatic in nature. Selections can be cuttings from published-printed novels, short stories, plays, poetry, or any other printed-published materials. The Presentations must be memorized, without props or costumes. The time limit is 10 minutes which includes an introduction. Drama is much like Humor but uses dramatic scripts. Unlike humor though, drama cuttings usually have one or very few characters.
Humorous Interpretation(HI):Humor Interp is an individual event in which the selections are humorous in nature. In Humor you take a humorous play, short story, or any other published material and edit it to approximately ten minutes, then you develop personalities and voices for each character in the cutting. The Presentations must be memorized, without props or costumes.
